Named for General George Washington, Washington County is located in Southwest Virginia on the Virginia-Tennessee state line. Interstate 81 runs through the county’s central valley and intersects with Interstate 77 approximately 55 miles northeast of the Town of Abingdon, Washington County’s seat of government. Washington County is home to many well-known cultural and historical landmarks, including the Barter Theatre and Emory & Henry College.
